11-Day Exploratory Photographic Adventure
Introduction
This is an exploratory tour to new locations in Hokkaido. We will be spending most of our time in the North (where there is often a lot more snow). We will visit a special Tori gate location, Tsunami barrier coastal regions as well as some special copse and trees in the centre of the island.
Arrival & Departure
Please arrive in Chitose on the 14th of January.
Departure is on the 24th of January from Memanbetsu Airport.
An exploratory tour around Northern Hokkaido
I’ve been wanting to explore some new areas of Hokkaido for some time. To shake up my itinerary this year, I felt I would like to go and shoot around the northern region of Hokkaido.
Many of the places we will go to have been extensively researched by my guide and as such, are often on private land. We have special permission to photograph them and will sometimes have to use snow shoes to access these areas. These locations are not ‘regular tourist photographic spots’, and you won’t find most of these places have been photographed by others.
Small Group Size
I’m running this tour with a small group size of 5 participants.
Required Fitness Level
Easy to occassionally Demanding
Most locations are very close to the car, but there are several walks of up to 30 minutes each way which will require the use of snow shoes. You should be fit enough for the demands of walking in very deep snow with your camera and backpack (this can be strenuous for those who do not do this type of activity regularly).
The weather in January can be extremely cold with temperatures down to -17ºC and beyond. Coupled with occassional snow storms and occasional very deep snow, this tour is more physically demanding than a standard photo tour and should be considered before booking.

Day 4: all day around Kenbuchi
Day 5: Kenbuchi ~ Tori gate on the beach
Day 6: Shosanbetsu~ Wakkanai
Day 7: All day around Wakanai
Day 8: Wakkanai ~ Utanobori ~ Esashi
Day 9: Utashinai ~ Lake Saroma
Day 10: All day around Saroma and Yubetsu
Day 11: Lake Saroma ~ Memanbetsu airport (MMB)
